Depends on the quality of the CD-R or DVD-R and the conditions of its storage (i.e. no scratches, not in direct sunlight). I'd say 3 to 5 years is about normal. Also, be careful if you mark your disks with a marker, the ink will sometimes bleed into the data and cause damage.

You should store them in a plastic case away from extreme heat or cold.

I read an article a few months ago that said that after a few years, the material on the CD disks start to deteriorate. Also, you have to consider whether or not the newer technology will allow you to access the older format on the CD. Even though there are ways to convert older versions to the newer formats, sometimes the conversion is garbled or incomplete.

So what is the answer? A few years ago, the experts thought that encrypting information on a CD was the ultimate way to save important information forever. This has been proved wrong. Time will tell if the newer generation of computers will be able to generate quality, long lasting Cd's. After all, music Cd's have a long shelf life, but they are produced in a studio with the best and most sophisticated technology.

CD has a life span or about 10 years to 15 years because of the material used (aluminum). Best way to store photos is store them onto flash memory or in your computer with a backup system (such as RAID).

They should last forever, or at least until the metal on the disc corrodes ( 100+ years ).
But things like heat and water damage can also kill them and scrathes.
Best way to keep is in a soft clean paddded sleve inside a hard case - any computer shop sells these.
Always be sure to back up
