I don't think they're portrayed as dumb. The are portrayed as poor, rowdy, and drunk all the time, and that's not entirely true, but not stupid. Polish people are portrayed more for being stupid, and that's off the mark as well.

I guess that ever nationality gets labeled something foolish and untrue. I mean, look what Jews have to deal with. And Africans. Oh, and Asians have a lot nonsense attributed to them. It's everywhere in every culture...

it's because we allow this sterotype of us to be portrayed on television and stage. american tv doesnt help either, from star trek to the cosby show. they are both guilty of sterotyping ireland and the irish. proof? star trek voyager where janeway falls in love with a holodeck character from a book. the next generation the colony of irish settlers. and the cosby show the episode where the youngster hit the phone numbers at random bill cosby picks the phone from the little girl and say "oh dublin what times it there?, ok sorry about that top'o the morn to ya" i have never said or heard top 'o the morn. but bord failte as long as they see green, hell im going to put a pig under my arm and whore meself as a genuine irish eejit.

I never noticed this. I have always thought that in movies they are very passionate about things and like to settle things with fighting. Just in movies though, the Irish people I know are no different from anyone else, good and bad.

I in general believe your respond to break of day, even with the actuality that he's sweet approximately German immigration to the U.S. some 8 million arrivals from Germany have been recorded for the period of the nineteenth century. Fifty-a million individuals declare German ancestry to on the instant. German-language newspapers have been nonetheless being revealed contained in the early twentieth century and German-talking districts in great American cities have been aplenty. German individuals nonetheless make out the biggest self-reported ancestral team contained in the U.S. As for the Irish, 5 million is almost precise, as maximum estimates purpose for a touch over 4 million from the 18th century to the early 1990's. Canada won a touch over a million for the duration of greater or less the comparable era. remember that eire's inhabitants precise in the previous the famine became recorded as 8.2 million and has in no way even been near to returning to that time because. And now to respond to your question, I additionally think of that's in many cases Hollywood's taking part in on the stereotypes (that are in maximum cases partly real); Catholicism contained in the U.S. (or in English-talking Canada) continues to be many times linked with the Irish for obvious motives (fantastically non secular human beings, wide-unfold limitless Catholic parishes as they emigrated to the U.S., etc.).

Maybe because they are (only joking). I think it stems from the time when Ireland was alargely agrarian society and Britain mostly only imported the less well off members of Irish society who would appear as country bumpkins to most English people.

It's just popularized by the prejudiced liberal media.I'm not Irish but I'm sick and tired of their biases towards whites in general .If you or I said the same things towards any other ethic group we would be labeled a racist and reported on all the news stations 24 hours a day.

You admit to being Irish. You are a level 1 with a minus 2 points for the week and an overall point count of 106 since you have been a member.

AND.. you ask "why do the Irish always get portrayed as stupid?"

Actually, I have some Irish ancestors... but I have even MORE British ancestors... and they killed all the Irish ones a couple of centuries ago in an attempt to raise the average IQ of my clan.

It's a dumb stereo type...we always try to put people in a box...because we fear what we don't understand...Irish have been described as loud mouth drunks for ages...not exactly sure how to solve that one...all you can do is be proud of who you are.
