I work for a family owned professional photography business have worked here for 12 yrs.In this time I have had to listen to the parents say"out loud"that they should fire everyone and cut their clients in half. Now, the son, who use to be an employee and hated it when his parents would say that is now pretty much doing the same thing. They always take one person out of the group and put them on a pedistal, and praise them to no end. They leave the other employees out, even thought they are working harder and have as much talent as the one they only praise. If they have a problem with an employee, they will talk about them behind their back, to others, but not confront the one with whatever problem they may be having with them. I'm tired of it.I thought it would change and it hasn't. Should I try to bring it up to them.Tell them my/our grievances or should I just go look for another position elsewhere? I'm sure someone else has been through this kind of crap before.

btw, the parents retired last year, and the son is now the owner. The son has been a very close friend of mine for the entire 12 yrs. But I don't like the person he has become since he took over. I know changes had to come, but he's no better than they were, in regards to business and employees.

It sounds like you are not appreciated at your present job. You will need to evaluate your present position and determine if you wish to stay or look for a new job. Remember every job will have its ups and downs the big question is - is it worth leaving.
I work at a hospital its hard work and weekends and holidays but they pay well and great benefits, so I stay.

This is the problem with a family owned business. Unless you are family, you don't have much of a chance to do you best work. If you have been friends with the new owner (son) and been an employee for 12 years, I think you should try to tell him the issues and problems created by it, and give him a chance to respond. I suspect they would hate to lose you. And, it may shock him in to being a better manager than his parents were.

If not, then you can look for another job, because nothing will change.

I would suggest sending out resumes and getting a new job then going off on them at the last moment before you leave.
It would be best to leave at a very inopportune time for them.
If you bring it up the chances are that they will fire you.
It is apparent that they are not very good at the jobs they are trying to do so there fore your talent as well as the rest of the employees, is being wasted.
Good Luck

I'd look elsewhere. If your friend asks why, tell him it's because he's turned into his parents and you thought you both hated that.

Family owned businesses are the WORST to work for, mostly because they have no real world experience in the workplace and have no idea how to be decent employers. Sadly, in spite of themselves, they are successful so they see no need to change. After 12 years at the same job you should be able to work anyplace you like within the frame of your experience.

Congratulations, you have 12 years of real world experience !

It is now time for you to take that experience and start your own company. By now you have discovered what it takes to run a business like this, see if anyone might go in on this with you. With the right direction YOU CAN DO IT ! MAKE MORE MONEY, DO IT RIGHT FOR YOURSELF. If you always do what you have always done, You will always get what you have always gotten.
In the Spirit of Success,

Dan

I work in the same climate. Thick skin helps to a point. your life shouldn't revolve around work. Do 8 hours and go home. A new job would help, just don't let them find out you are looking. you aren't alone. Good luck.

I've been through a similiar position.

There's a saying, here's how it goes...

You work for a family business.
You're not family.

Countryguy

P.S. It's a great answer for interviewers...
Q: Why did you leave?
A: It's a family business.
I wasn't family.
