A security chain or bolt lock. You would be in violation of your lease if you change the lock's, even if you put the original lock's back on when you leave. The landlord must be able to get into the apartment. If he/she cannot and the door must be broken down you will have to pay for the damages. If you have some reason not to trust your landlord I wouldn't stay there any longer than I had to. If you trust your landlord I don't see any problem. Your main door is usually the least of you worries, window's and balcony or patio door's would be a criminals first choice.

There is an alarm that you could install for use when you're home. It is also portable. Check it out at Home Depot. There are two sides to the sensor, and when the connection is broken, an alarm goes off. It used to have one, but I moved and no longer needed it. I think it cost $20.
I live in a condo too and I am also required to have my key on file in the office. There is nothing you can do about that, you agreed to abide by the bylaws of the building when you moved in.

Go to Lowe's and check out the locks that are designed to be used when you are at home. There are several devices that can be installed on the inside of a door to prevent entry. Some are chains which are common. There have been new hardware developed and in the market place. There is the Dual Function Door Security Bar. You can check it out online. Good Luck and Stay Safe.

Brake? Isn't it BREAK?
Sounds like a bad case of paranoia. If you want to have no one have your key, buy your own house.
You could be legally evicted if you change the locks and do not give management access. Install an alarm system with a monitoring service.

There is an alarm at the home depot designed for pool safety it's easy to install and works on a 9v battery and is loud as hell, if the door is even jarred the entire building will hear the thing go off. Also look into buying some mace.

I understand what this is like the reason they have to have acess to your apartment is in cause of something happening. I would not worry to much about them comeing in but what I would do is share your concerns with your manager and see if you can come to a way to resolve it I would not change your lock because they can kick you out for that.

If they have access to the apartment in an emergency then let them break-in. They would need to provide a proper definition of "Emergency"!
Change the locks on your property and do not worry about it.
You have a right to feel safe in your home.

Put a lock on the inside of the door for you to lock when you are home, I usually leave the keys in the door when i am in so my landlord can't use his when i am home.

I don't remember the name of them, but you could wear one of those things around your neck where you could push a button in an emergency so that help arrives...or you could get a watch dog or cat if pets are permitted.
