The west has realised that Islam was spreading very fast among the Europeans and Americans. The only way to block this spread is by scaring the people in the west of Islam and Muslims by labelling Muslims as terrorists and Islam and Koran as tools to encourage killing and torturing, which is not at all what is Islam about. What is happening in the middle east is simply because of the land occupation by Israel and the USA. The presence of dictatorship leaders in ALL Muslims land appointed and supported by the west to ensure TWO things, First the influx of oil to the western countries and second to ensure safety of Israel. This is simply what is going on. I'm a Muslims, I always had equal numbers of Muslims and Christians friends. My grandmother's house was shared with a christian family and we grew all up together loving and respecting Jesus and Mohamed. If there is religious war now among different religion in the middle east is because the interference of the west using the old rules, divide and you will role.

If you think "islamophobia" is a clever term, then try "anti-semite". Anything you utter against Israel's totalitarian approach to middle east would be met with an accusation "anti-semite".
Israel is a colony, a theocratic state, with illegal weapons of mass destruction, illegal invasion, occupation and other crimes. Since it is getting a free-pass because the christian fundies in US are behind it, the islamic radicals are designing clever terms to counter it. If Israel problem is solved, then there won't be any islamic problem. The middle east situation gives a good handle for the muslim clerics to exploit and whip up religious fundamentalism.
Clever terms, tactics (of releasing timely news reports) etc are part of the big political game. This is why none of the "mainstream" media is trustworthy anymore.

I did lots of background research on Islamophobia because I was going to study it further for sociology coursework (but decided to study hoodies and moral panics instead because it was a lot easier). There have been several cases of Muslims (and Asian people who aren't Muslims but had been mistaken for them by ignorant people) being targeted with violence just because they're Muslim (or have been mistaken for one). Many of these cases are post 9/11. For example, someone smashed a glass bottle over the head of a Muslim girl on a bus in Glasgow and shouted something insulting (can't remember what) just because she was wearing a head scarf and was Asian.
Islamophobia is real and it's a paranoid reaction with a lot of ignorance behind it.

Good point. The Muslims are trying to copy the Jews with their anti-Discrimination League.
Trouble is that the Muslims haven't been persecuted, never had a holocaust -- except for the slaughters that THEY perpetrated, like on the Armenians and the citizens of Hama, Syria and the killings of Kurds by Sadam and by the Turks . . . and all those slaughters in Muslim history.

The Islamics and their buddies the liberal/left wing hate the fact that we (ie: none Islamics) question Islamic tendancies. There is no or little real "phobia" just a healthy mistrust of people who admit that they worship a doctrine that advocates killing gays, subjugating women and killing anyone who isnt muslim (infidels). The muslims are protesting pretty loudly because they know that they have shown their true colours too early and they now have a busted flush.

It is a fear being generated by the British and American governments, to draw attention away from their own massive shortcomings.
There is no reason to fear Islam, other than the fact that WE are attacking THEM, and sooner or later, THEY are going to get fed up of it

It's precisely the same tool the gays use to try to suppress us by calling us 'homophobes' when we disagree with their disgusting behavior. The liberal news media is guilty of succumbing to this nonsense, too under the guise of 'political correctness'.
How about this example: When the Mexicans got together to protest immigration legislation, where was the distinction made to separate legals from illegals? Hmmm? Huge difference, but everyone seems to lump them together and label those who are against illegal immigration as racists as if we're against ALL immigration... legal or illegal.
It's called distortion. The press is guilty of it as well as those who are ignoring the facts and trying to gloss everything over. There are some really bad people out there who are taught to hate us (here in the USA and other free countries) and are plotting against us RIGHT NOW!. They are very patient and devious. Nope, I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you? So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling.
