Gold and other precious metals are weighed in Troy weight.
In common usage in the US, everything else is weighed in Avoidupois weight.
An ounce of gold (Troy)weighs 480 grains.
An once of feathers (Avoirdupois) weighs 437.5 grains
A Troy pound has only twelve ounces and equals 5,760 grains
An Avoirdupois pound has 16 ounces and equals 7,000 grains.
Therefore, an ounce of gold is heavier than an ounce of feathers but a pound of feathers is heavier than a pound of gold.
actually, that is what I was looking for... messed up with the metric ton being 1000 but same thing.

A couple first things first.
A ton, in Avoirdupois weight, equals 2, 000 pounds, not 1,000.
We can safely assume that you are not referring to a long ton, which is something else entirely.
Two different weight systems are used for gold and for feathers.

I can confuse you even more if you would like me to.

assuming 1000lb of gold and 1000lb of feathers, then both have the same MASS, but not necessarily the same WEIGHT.
Then, the difference in weight will only be defined by the place you put them in. The one that weighs more will be the one you put in the place where the gravity field is the greatest (gravity, on earth ranges from 9.8N/kg to 9.82N/kg depending on the place you're in). Weight isn't measured in kg or lbs, but in Newtons. kg and lbs are measures for mass, not weight.
Therefore, I can't answer before you give me more data on the gravitational field in the places you keep the gold and the feathers (and if you tell me where both are, then you won't be having any gold left)

It depends if it is a metric ton (about 2200lbs) or an imperial tonne (1000lbs)...

A ton of feathers: 2,000 lbs > 1,000 lbs of gold. But, I'd rather have 1,000 lb of gold, so I put more "weight" in that!
