project management tries to take care of the 'golden triangle'
that means there is a balance between time, resources and the goal of the project, the manager has to maintain the right balance between the 3, as they all are interconnected
a project has these characteristics
1) it has a fixed start and end
2) there is a scarcity of resources involved
3)it is unique that means that it hasnt been done before
4)it leads to an acheivement or has a motive to be achieved by
the project
most people confuse it with things like product management or process management although it is different as the project has a fixed start and end therefore once it is over the team is dispersed back to thier specific line managers.
Poject management is facing big challenges as to new things such as concurrent engineering and extreme development in software industry , or outsourcing where half the project is being done at an offshored location and there is minimal real time contact, mans that it is becoming more complex, and that project manegement has to reduce this complexity.

A lot of times on a project, there will be budgets, multiple people, communication, etc. that all needs to be controlled for a project to run smoothly. A project manager will oversee everything and make sure there is not duplication of effort or that nothing is being missed. Kind of like coaching a team.

Generally, the main purpose of Project Management is to plan time, cost and resources adequately to estimate the work needed. It aims to manage the risks during project execution. These risks pertain to both the workforce (people) and the outcome itself.

To achieve specific goals, project management helps you in the activity of planning, motivating, organizing and controlling resources. Time management and cost management plays a vital role in any project. The common characteristic that is shared by all projects are projection of ideas into new endeavors.
The most important purpose of project management includes,

• to plan, organize and control activities
You must start these processes before any resource is committed and continue it until the work is finished.
