LIBERTY ISLAND NAME CHRONOLOGY
• Pre 1600's Mohegan Indians call the island "Minnissais" meaning Lesser Island.
• 1664English seize Oyster Island from Mohegan Indians
• 1668Island sold to Issack Bedloo, New Amsterdam businessman and "select burgher", who names it "Love Island"
• 1753Archibald Kennedy buys the island in 1746 and builds house, light house, promoted name of "Kennedy Island"
• 1760'sNew York builds hospital on island, effective for quarantine. Name Bedloe's Island remains.
• 1960June 30. Bedloe's Island officially renamed Liberty Island.
So the formers names are Minnissais,Lesser Island,Great Oyster, Love Island, Bedloo's Island, Kennedy's Island, Corporation Island, Bedlow's Island (an anglicized form of the original owner's name), Bedloe's Island and now Liberty Island.

Former and merged names include:

The statue arrived dismantled, in 214 packing cases, from France, in 1885. The last rivet was driven in 1886, when President Grover Cleveland dedicated the monument
