Well, it's ethics to me clever clogs. Is it more ethical to dip into the (albeit rather shallow) fountain of my own wisdom and knowledge, do a bit of research on the internet and give a carefully thought out, useful answer to someone and hope that in some small way I have helped someone or added to the overall wealth of human knowledge?

Or is it better to have some fun and take the piss?

I can't quite make my mind up.

To be honest it depends on the situation - who is asking, what the question is and what the possible consequences are.

For example, I am a wheelchair user. People frequently ask me why that is. If it someone who is genuinely interested, someone I am going to meet again or who will learn something from my answer (ex: a child) I will tell them my diagnosis and how I got it.

If it's just a random taxi driver or rude person on the street/in the pub who I will probably never see again I tend to have a laugh.... I have convinced people several times that I'm not disabled just plain lazy. Whereas with a child it's just curiousity and so I tend to explain that my legs don't work because...

I guess basically what I'm saying is that this is a decision you have to make for yourself but you have to weigh up the question, the consequences of the question etc and then decide.

Ethics have overlapping yet distinct dimensions to it. Ethics also has a space time dynamic about it. Frist of all there are no absolute ethics. What makes something ethical in some parts of the world isn't in other and changes with time.

One dimension is the ethics of a society or culture as a whole, and the other being what is ethical for each of us as individuals. It helps to live in a space and time where they match or at least parallel to each other.

So the bottom line is, do what you feel is right at the time of deciding (you may even change your mind later on but that’s not important). After all the whole concept of sacrificing fun to help others is also part of having "fun" doing just that.

If you would spend a little more time in reality maybe you would actually be able to understand and comprehend where everyone on this sight is coming from. My reasoning behind that statement is as follows, you have continually mocked people (avatars, grammar usage, etc.) and then wonder why people get pissy with you. If you were as clever as you obviously THINK you are, you would have figured out to get better responses you would have to be a little more tactful. Good day.

There is plenty of scope for doing both. Unless you deliberately try to mislead someone on a serious issue I don't see this as an ethical issue.

And, lest I offend in a clever clogs manner of speaking, let me make amends by saying thanks for writing as clearly as you do.

Respect.

PS I am very close to achieving 2nd level status and wondering what difference it will make so my proximity to promotion is influencing my answering somewhat. But I'd not confess to point-grabbing!

It doesn't usually matter.

There's always someone who will take the other road, or someone who will take the same road only do it better. See how you react to each question. And do what you think is best. You can have fun either way. But try not to hurt anyone.

The only question is what makes you happy. I enjoy a bit of both depending on my mood and what I think of the question. Whichever you find fun is OK as surely this is the reason for being here.

You need to play these questions by ear. Some are genuine people searching for help and answers, that would be your first part. There are also some on here who cannot be taken very seriously then you also don't have to be too serious.

What an intelligent and probing question. I can not believe that your fountain of wisdom and knowledge can be shallow, unfortunately mine is and so I can not answer your question.
