i dont want to go to college after high school, i want to do something that involves studying in a different country. i have found a program called LEAPYear (http://www.leapnow.org/home.htm ) which sounds great because i get to learn about different cultures, and help other people, AND it is just a year and the credits can all transfer over to a college and count as a year of college. what i would like to know, is does anyone know of another program that would be like the link above, because my mom and dad are not too crazy about the places offered to study at. OR does anyone know how i could phrase a search to find alternative programs to attend after high school (that aren't colleges). sorry if this makes no sense, its hard to explain with out rambling on, which i ended up doing anyways lol.

The "gap year" is a common practice in England, but is gaining popularity in the US as well.

Here are some books to help you find the "gap year" program that is right for you:

Taking Time Off: Inspiring Stories of Students who Enjoyed Successful Breaks from College and How You Can Plan Your Own, by Colin Hall and Ron Lieber (Princeton Review, 2003)

Taking a Gap Year, by Susan Griffith (Vacation Work, 2005)

The websites below (especially the first three) should be of great help to you as well.

Taking a year off to work or do something abroad is not a bad idea. I think the worst thing you can do is get started in a program of study and not really know why you're there. It's an expensive mistake. Worse you can get a whole degree, start working and then discover you hate your job. I fall into the latter camp and have been spending the past year trying to figure out what my options are. Most look expensive in time or money. It's a long life and one year off is not going to destroy it.

You can go to work for a construction company and work on hot, dirty, dangerous construction sites for less money than you really want to earn for as few decades. Or you can go into the Army and go to Iraq and get blown up.
Or better, you can do this.
Take a year off and make some really careful decisions about what you want to study and where you want to do it. Remember that what you need to do is have a good idea what you want to accompllish in college. DON'T just go to a local college and start taking classes. That's expensive and boring and not very smart. Be prepared to travel to get the education you want. They probably do not have everything you want at the local schools you have close to home. Look around and find something that you can be interested and do well in. It's nice ot have fun in school but every minute you sit in class costs money. Take your college training very seriously and business like and do very well at it.
Good luck.
