right click on the file > select properties from the menu.
In the window that pops up you will see.
Type of file.

Note down the type of file. And search in google. You will find a program that you will need to download and install on your computer.
Or, just add details in this question, stating the type of the file.

might be that you want to change the program that the file opens with - as sometimes can default to open with wrong program.

to do this locate the file you want to open, left click on it then hold the shift key down, right click and select open with (believe on xp it gives you the option to open with without holding the shift key down), select choose program and select the program you want to open the file with. Directly below this there will be a check button to always use this program to open it with -if you check this, for any future files of this filetype this program will now be used to open it with.

If its a small file open it with notepad, the first few letters tend to give it away

Well, you needed to be more specific - but find out what the file *is* and get the software to open it. Go to http://www.wotsit.org/ enter the file extension and see what it throws up.

You need to have the right program installed. It helps if you know the file extension. Once you've found that you can google to see what programs will open it.
