One day while i was on my computer, the power knocked out and now once ever so often my computer freezes to a point where it will not read/save anything. For ex: the word Start at the bottom left disappears, Wordpad/Text Documents can't be saved/red, Internet Explorer Icon now shows an unknown file icon when i click on the Desktop Shortcut(at the bottom right of my screen), When i am able to click Start it gives me a drop down window box for me to select Restart or Shutdown, and when it doesn't i have to manually click the Shutdown Button. This happens rather i am using Limewire or Not. I think it might be a bug, i have already used Earthlink Protection Control Center and Norton Spyware Scan with Yahoo Toolbar, and it still occurrs. Can it possibly be something wrong with my DSL Modem that causes the computer glitch. Also i have Yahoo Widgets, and on my Digital Clock Widget, the 10s and 1s place of the DCW will read File Missing, or something like that. Has anyone one experienced this.

more than likely, when the power was knocked out, it corrupted the data on the hard drive, or caused damage to the hard drive by crashing the read/write heads into the platter. I would recommend backing up data, and try a clean reinstall of windows. If the problem persists, change the hard drive. I would like to also suggest getting an uninteruptable power supply(ups). It's a battery backup that will give you time to properly shut down your computer with out causing any damage the next time the power is knocked out

The power surge you described may have fried a component on the motherboard. Try the re-install operating system route. If that doesn't clear the problem, physically look inside and see if anything looks burned or out of the ordinary. You may consider taking to a tech for a thorough exam.

A voltage spike from a lightning strike can corrupt the data. Look into getting a surge suppressor.

Try a System Restore? It should be in the System Tools in the Accessories in Programs.
