Labor day started in the late 1880's , originaly in NY by local labor unions to celebrate the working man. Many other unions celebrated on May 1st, but since that was the day favored by most comunist contries, and because of union riots on that day in Chicago in 1886 , it was decided to celebrate in September instead.

I understand WHY people celebrate Labor Day... but I DON'T understand is why I have to work on Labor Day.... and why does everyone shop at Wal-Mart on holidays... gee

Labor day was given to the workers who where whining and complaining at the time, it was a political move. American workers are among the laziest in the world. Labor day used to be the last holiday of the summer before school started again. But the NEA (national education association) lobbied to add school days to the year and forked that right up!
