Labor day started in the late 1880's , originaly in NY by local labor unions to celebrate the working man. Many other unions celebrated on May 1st, but since that was the day favored by most comunist contries, and because of union riots on that day in Chicago in 1886 , it was decided to celebrate in September instead.
