No drug test--there are still some honest people in this world. Some people realize drug tests can be faked, or better yet that the labs screw things up enough to not be that reliable.

In fact, I would prefer to work for an employer who skips the drug test. This shows me they trust their own judgment about hiring people, and have confidence in their abilities to properly manage people.

Small towns have their good and bad points. There is more of a chance of creating some longer lasting relationships with people and becoming a part of a community.

On the other hand, you will find a lot of gossip, and may even be the brunt of it at times, so be aware of that. Privacy is difficult to obtain. Your dating habits and any other juicy information will be the talk of the town. Also, if it is a bible belt town, you better belong to the "right" church. Just some things to think about....

You should watch the movie Stone Cold. It is sort of a look at small-town law enforcement.

I started my law enforcement career in a small college town in 1982. Pay was like $4.25 an hour to start. I was only 19 and not even old enough to buy a service revolver. Spent over 6 months on the street before I even went to the academy. There was no such thing as a Field Training Officer. I learned what I needed on my own. It was one of the best jobs I had and I regret having moved on for more money. I would probably be police chief by now.

Learned a lot. Being a college town, we had a lot of activity going on for most of the year. We also had our share of burglaries, robberies and homicides just like any big city. We also had a drug problem. I can remember in 1984 finding a white "rock" in some formaldehyde on a suspect and no one knew what it was. It was the advent of crack. I also had the opportunity to be a detective. My first weekend on was one of the busiest times on record for the department. Since the detective on call handled anything and everything, I worked almost 48 hours straight with two murders, a handful of armed robberies and a suicide by hanging. Talk about baptism under fire!

A small town would be the best place to start. We live in a small town where there is less crime, and I think that would be ideal for you to start there to gain your experience. I agree with the other members that there are some towns that still believe in honesty about not taking a drug test. And it may occur randomly.

Good Luck with your job, I have the most respect for Law Enforcement and the work you do.....yall are on the line protecting our lives and I wish yall got paid more for what you do.

Do you think that it might be because they know you and trust you that you don't have to take a drug test? Yes a small town is a good place to start.

Well a small town would be better i think and less dangerous. Not having to take a drug test, seems odd but in the US anything is possible.

in the previous 24-hour eating places have been frequently used, the sole institutions the place a police officer ought to pass for the period of the ineffective night (aka "graveyard") shifts have been doughnut shops which often stayed open 24 hours an afternoon. So particular, lots of cops did devour doughnuts while there have been not many different alternatives accessible.
