They actually were not exactly successful. One of the reasons that the French lost the French and Indian war of 1755 was that they sided with the Algonquins and alienated the Iroquois Indians who were ancestral enemies of the Algonquins. That caused the Iroquois to join with the British against the French and the Algonquins. If the British had not had the Iroquois on their side, the French might very well have won the war.

What Paul McBride said is very true, but I would have to also say that the French were trappers and traders. They were not, in the view of the Native Americans trying to take over the land. The Native Americans felt that the British were. Also, the French married Native American women and were still accepted by other French people. The British may never have been accepted in "civilized" society if they married a Native American. Another big reason would be religion. While there were French Missionaries they lived with the Native Americans and tried to understand their culture and beliefs. They did not press their religion on the Native Americans. The British were the opposite.
