For a while now the gas people, who don't appear to employ meter readers, have sent me bills with an estimated usage. I send them a cheque for half the amount with a note explaining that it represents my estimate of usage. They just bank the cheque.

What country are you in, because in the UK, meters have to be read at least once a year?.

lol, sound like you are both in screaming agreement. After all estimates are opinions and opinions are like lawyers everyone has one.
In my state, there has to be an area in the bill that shows the last actual meter reading. If your bill has that go to your meter and you read the meter compare it to the last meter reading shown and then compare that with the number that they are estimating on the most current billing.
Knowledge is power and luck favors the prepared. Careful; if you become entrenched in thinking that the practice of estimating is not in your best interest and not fair, when and if they come to collect for any balances not shown on their estimates you won't win the argument. Winter is around the corner and coal is an alternative (just kidding).

You are doing the right thing. Their estimates are usually far too high. But why not simply not pay them at all, writing a stiff line that you cannot agree with their estimate? Agitate for them to read the meter.

It's getting harder and harder to talk to a human - especially when trying to contact utility companies. My work involves helping people to sort out excessive demands like the ones you describe so you can imagine an individual's frustration multiplied several times.

Can you read the meter yourself and give this to your gas supplier? They are likely to accept this since the only way they can challenge your reading is to come out and take an actual reading themselves - which they surely will get around to doing at some stage.

Read your own meter and give them the reading. some companies allow you to do it on line. By the way these people are ALWAYS the cheapest for gas and electric. ( but not the other stuff they sell) www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk
They are much better than Brit Gas and you can give them your own meter readings. Try www.1899.com for your phone calls as well.
