That's because winds and currents go the same way. I think it has to do something with the rotation of our planet to. Every hurricane has an almost perfect south-east north-west movement in the northern hemisphere

Everyone who can move from west Africa wants to get to North
America.
The fact is that Cyclones / hurricanes on the northern hemisphere are created on oceans of warm water and move north west, due to Earth rotation and the world cycle of winds from equatorial to temperate zones.
this occurs in the Atlantic and pacific oceans.

The prevailing wind system moves to the West there. They subsequently turn East as they travel North hitting the prevailing winds moving Eastward and turning out to the North Atlantic. Neat-o right?
