Mileage Clock reset ???

Question

I've overheard a conversation of certain dodgy guys in a public transport & wonder if I get to know how much truth there is in their conversation.

Is it really possible to "reset" or perhaps "fiddle" the numbers of "mileage clock" in the car (or any vehicle) ??? If so how exacly could this be achieved ??? Not that I fancy doing it myself but just intrigued to get to know about it.

How illegal would this be seen in different countries, esp. the UK & the USA ???

On older cars with mechanical odometers it can be done easily by anyone with basic common sense.

On more recent cars with electronic panels, it can be done by accessing the system using a laptop, as described in one of your other answers.

In the UK it is not actually illegal to 'clock' a vehicle, but it is illegal to claim that the new mileage is correct.

For a private individual, you could be found guilty of fraud if it was proved you had done it, and the person who bought the car could claim damage from you. For a dealer, the penalties are very much more severe, and can involve jail.

Soon after the Trade Descriptions Act became law in the late 60's, there were a number of cases involving this, and Henlys, who were then the country's largest Jaguar dealers, attempted to avoid possible prosecution by returning to zero all the odometers in their used cars. They invited the customer to make their buying decision on the condition of the car!!

However, a court found them guilty of applying a false trade description because they knew the recorded mileage but did not disclose it.

I think I am going to drive this car into the ground there should be two odo meters the one adjustable you see and the odo and hour meter stored in the body control system. However you question yes at the time I replace the speedometer with a new one The chip is burnt with the current mileage Most current cars after 2000 have LCD display and a read only chip that sends the signal to the small numerical display. Tampering with the mileage is Illegal. Old spedo with rolling numbers were to easy to change. Care must be taked not to get the numbers out of horizonal alignment. Just a stack of numbered disks with a pin as each turns .0 to .9 pin takes 1. to 2. And 9. takes 10 to 11 and so on each has a seperator and plastic strap across the back that fits down in a groove patence and good watchmaking skills a plus. To intricate for my bashed up auto mechanic fingers.

yes U can clock cars, the modern ones with the digital clocks are easier to do, it is not illegal to clock Ur car, but it is illegal to then sell it without saying that the car has been clocked

the older ones, have to be removed and manually turned, to move the clock forward, as most can not have the miles taken off, it can be done using a drill to wind it on till it flips over to 000000, and then one to the desired mileage

there are companies that will do it for U

this is in the UK, i don't know about any other countries

It can be done using a laptop certain places will do it no questions asked and yes a few people have been done for it but like everything the majority get away with it.The other option is to change the speedo which is perfectly legal, just go to a scrapyard and find a clock with lower milage than yours or have it altered to whatever you want.

You are not allowed to do it in the UK. And, by the way the justice system works here, you would probably get life imprisonment!

Not sure how you do it and it is probably much harder now - on new cars with digital displays. But as they say, "where there's a will, there's a way".

"Clocking" is a wide spread practise, I had my car clocked legitimately because I needed to change the instrument pod due to a faulty ABS sensor, the secondhand pod was showing a much higher mileage, it is a digital readout and it was clocked using a laptop and special software, the older type readouts were just pulled apart and the numerals moved by hand.

its so easy..any moron can do it...but, clcoking is a serious offence, and you will go to jail of caught... (dealers usually)

and clcoking it is one thing, but all MOTs are sent direct to the DVLA, with the mileage of your car at the test... and you cant fiddle that.

the only (slightly) more legal option is to change the clock..but the old mileage is still recorded at the DVLA...
