If you are doing it live and not online then yes I would say it helps to have a auction house help you with it.

An auctioneer can only help you. He (she?) is really experienced at getting the price higher. Otherwise, an on-line auction is the way to go. Even E-Bay. If you do EBay, then you can send a press release to local news media. That's the kind of thing they'd love to do for a filler story. Then, more people in your area become interested. Good luck!
