If you're a girl, you could read Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (followed by Little Men and Jo's Boys, if you want). If you're a guy, you might prefer something else. If spy books don't count as mystery/crime, then try Spy Catcher by Peter Wright (a true account of a guy who used to work with the British secret services, both of them). Otherwise, you might try Stephen Lawheads' The Paradise War series (it's a bit gory, though) or Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Many Waters.

If you liked good long books - and it seems like you do, then you can't go wrong with Dickens (unless you start with Barnaby Rudge his least successful novel)
There's no reason you shouldnt' start at the beginning with Pickwick Papers -the first 20/30 pages are a bit slow but then he really gets the hang of it and he's away and writing. As you read his novels in sequence, both Dickens and the reader get a more sophisticated view of what Dickens is trying to say about how to live, and the need for generosity and commitment to life and other people.
Moreover, he wrote books which are still filmed and quoted from to this day. They're funny, tragic, romantic and just plain weird in places.
If you find you like his books, you'll find him a friend for life.

Harry Potter!! You may need to read the first few and do maybe the 3rd one or up for the class because the first two aren't 300 pages.

Running From Bermuda by Leann Keeling
One For the Money by Janet Evanovich
Those are two that I can think of. Both are great books. I enjoyed them a lot, I don't know if they are your genre, but you might like them. Enjoy!
