Ok, here is why not to by Dell, you will notice that cost savings and why you get:
Support is not american and is hard to understand sometimes. Call centers in India
Notebooks are made of hard plastic not metal. They are usually much bulkier and heavier than other notebooks.
Parts are inferior and if you bought 10 laptops none of the laptops would have the same brand parts in it. Dell buys in lots from the cheapest components.
Their warranty actually states if they have to do a repair that they can use, used or refurbished parts to fix your notebook.
Finally 1.3M batteries. Why do you think that the "Sony" batteries only had "fire" problems in the Dell? No quality control on Dell's part. They bought the cheapest possible battery. Other companies use Dell batteries and they have not had fires.
Good Luck, go with Lenovo or Apple

Personally I wouldn't recommend them.
I had an Inspirion 5150 , and after only 14 months the thing died on me and a diagnostics test revealed that the motherboard had failed.
I hadn't taken out extended insurance and Dell quoted me repair costs of around £450 , which to be honest for a few quid more I could have got a new laptop.
What made this worse was I found out that this particular model was well known for having this issue (a google search pinpointed loads of similar complaints) and yet Dell had failed to acknowledge or act on the problem. Any calls to customer services were of the 'pay up or get lost' kind which after only 14 months of use I felt was pretty disgusting.
Needless to say that there is no way I would buy a Dell again. I have heard nothing but good things about Acer , although personally I have now switched to a mac (again , with no complaints).

I am a Dell service provider and I like them. If you have an issue with the hardware and call it in and Dell generally sends a service tech the next day. The battery thing you keep hearing about is not Dell but SONY and has hit more than just Dell its also hit Toshiba IBM and all who used the Sony batteries. Dell ships a good product that has a good value. As with all you milage may vary..

The two companies that have the best reputation to sell high quality notebooks are apple and lenovo (think pad series).
Then there are many cheap sellers where you can be almost sure that ALL of their products are garbage. Gericom, Medion are some of them.
Dell does not belong to any of these parties. They ship high end and low end products. Some of them are good quality, some of them suck.
Because of this, it is almost impossible to give an overall opinion on all of dells products. I recommend you first look at the different dell models that you could afford, then ask for people that own these models to share their experiences.

it depends on your "inferior" definition at this time everything is made in china, dell, lenovo, compaq , hp. even Sony is made in china , china is not that bad in technology. if you take in consideration technology what ever you buy today in 6 months the thing will be obsolete , then why are you going to spend 2000 us dollars in a new comp, better buy dell $900. that way you will feel not that bad next year. oh i bought 1 dell for my daughter last year for $799 , inspiron 6000 the thing still works like new. but in Australia i don't know.

If you compare DELL and HP, my opinion is DELL is more robust and can handle a bit more rough treatment, especially that is bound to happen at the hands of kids. The recent battery thing is a technical issue which was potentially risky, but I thought was handled well by the company. My bet is still on DELL--worth its low price and more.

I have heard that their after sales service leaves a lot to be desired. I know someone who bought one, after only a few weeks some keys stopped working. She sent it back to Dell some 3 months ago and the last I heard she has not got it back yet.
I had a go on a friends Compaq, I thought it felt very "cheap and nasty" compared to a Sony Vaio.

i bought a Dell Inspirion 6400 and i think it does its job well.
Compared to my old Acer, i thought the Dell laptop is much better in term of battery life, clarity of LCD images and sound. I encountered no operational problems with it so far. I adore it. :)
