Foam and foil board, it comes in 4X8 sheets. 1/4" to 1" thick.

you dont need any insulation under any siding, vinyl or other. some people use tyvek as a wind blocker and it works, kinda, and is hard to put on an already standing house. and the foam board is more for houses with cedar siding that you dont want to tear off. it only gives a smooth surface for your vinyl. insulating is done on the inside of the wall. oh and du pont makes tyvek, not grace.

4 by 8 sheets of three quater inch foam insulation from DOW tape seams with tyvec tape. this is the most important part of the siding job! you will save $ on heating bills if done properly.
