They have to decide it you can't push them to drop their habits. what you can do is only make them aware of negative effects of these things. may be one day they can learn a lesson from other persons who are suffering from several desises due to their habits. Only a persons willpower can help him to get rid from such kind if habits.

I'm sorry to say that there's really nothing you can do. The person concerned has to REALLY want to give them up and if he or she ever made that declaration, then as a friend you could give support. People who drink and smoke know of the dangers, but they think nothing will ever happen to them. Some people will quite suddenly decide to 'quit' and I've seen these people do so with complete success. Those same people's friends and family had been encouraging them for years to give up, but to no avail. It was during periods of 'nobody nagging' that they made the decision for themselves. If you don't like people smoking in your company, of course, that's a different matter and you could either ask your friend to go outside to smoke, or take yourself right away from him/her whilst they're smoking. The anti-social tag sometimes has some affect. I have to tell you that I'm a light smoker (5 a day); I enjoy them, and the only time I ever stopped was during my pregnancies. No amount of nagging will ever make me quit, although a health scare would!!

1. Consider an intervention.
2. Take your friend to an AA meeting and have him/her just sit there and listen.
3. Get some literature from your local AA or rehab centre, and give it to him. You can probably get some stuff online about the dangers of drinking and smoking.
4. Realize that you can try a lot of things but it's still a person's choice to quit and a person has to want to quit.

Tell them as often as you can the bad effects of excessive smoking or drinking. Help them to keep it in control. There is no use asking them to quit. They will never agree. Initially try containing the habit to a safe limit. That will be a commendable success.

Sweety i think there is no solution for that, cos once they start they cant stop even if they want them self. In medical terms what doctors do (and this is the right treatment for them) is, they put that person on ice block and that person is not suppose to move from that ice block -- Dr. do this for a month or so in this way they power to resist increases in them, its actually psychological too .

I made my friend stop smoking by this treatment. He is really happy now and thankful too.

It's hard to pull people away from it once they start, but hey, try. And remember that the reason that people get hooked is not just peer pressure any more. It's more of a lonliness or DESPAIR SYNDROME. A kind of " what have I got to lose, mines as well smoke pot type thing". SO BE NICE TO EVERYONE SO THAT NOBODY EVER GET'S TO THAT. Good luck.

Movies could help too much . For example ; the other day I watched " Leaving Las Vegas " with friends , at the end of the movie , they told me that they wouldn't drink any more .
The movie , as you know , about a drunk man .
Nicolas Cage plays the role very well .
Pics help too much !!

Its completely up to that person to stop his addiction. No one can control another persons habits (we'd like to say we can). All you can do is offer some alternatives. IE: wouldn't it be nice if we could see my relatives who don't drink or smoke.

Take them to a Clinic for Lung and/or Liver cancer.
Let them talk to the patients there, that will be a real eye opener.
