It depends on a couple of things.

1. Your DVD player. Mine wouldn't play the burnt DVD's without converting the file using something like CyberLink MakeDVD

If you plan to watch them on a dvd drive in your computer this usually isn't a problem. Its when you want to watch them on an actual stand alone DVD player that I always ran into the problem.

2. Sometimes if you burn avi's directly to a dvd the sound gets messed up. So depending on the quality of the DVD you want to burn, you might want to go ahead and use a DVD burning program like the one I mentioned above. :)

If you are just wanting to backup some avi files you downloaded, then yes you can burn them straight to a DVD and watch them later on your computer. I do this with Anime so I don't use up alot of space on my hard drive.

some dvd burning programs let you burn avi's and others dont, you would have to check the program you are useing.

yes if you have a divx dvd player all you will have to do is burn a data dvd
