I think it has been designed that way, let's face it, if there was no waiting, you'd be in and out in a jiffy and feel you didn't get your money's worth.

This is probably because people like the rides that you are currently in line for. Also, another reason could be because there aren't enough roller coaster trains on the track that there should be. The problem is that with your question, I have no idea what you are saying which is an hour. Some rides even with maximum amount of trains, and full queues are going to take an hour.
Some people like some rides more than others. Roller coasters get people because they are huge. There are some days when the roller coasters will be packed, but other rides will barely or not at all. There are a lot of thrill junkies at the parks, and that's why. Even at Disney, you are still waiting awhile. Once you see the same things, you can get bored still. It's not like the lines really help you out.

Have you ever tried going when it's not crowded? Try going on a weekday instead of the weekend. If you're going to a Disney park, go during the "off" season (avoid summer and major holidays).
Also, the early bird catches the worm. Get up early and get there right when the park opens. You can usually ride for a couple of hours with very little wait in lines.

whenever available, my family and I use the single rider lines. The regular queues are long because of "groups" that want to ride together. If there are 5 seats, and a group of 4 get on, there is one empty seat because the next people in line are a group of 3 that want to ride "together". So they send the ride of with an empty seat...
Next time, see if there is a single rider line. We have had times when 4 of us used this line, got on the ride at the same time (we just didn't sit next to each other) and we were done right away. No waiting!!

well it seems like the best rides have the longest wait, so they build them with those gated waiting areas that hold more people than should ever wait in line, and since they zigzag around you don't realize you're in line with soooooo many other people and the ride only takes 2 minutes so the wait can't be that loooong, RIGHT, and the brooklyn bridge is for sale too ;)
i guess the only way they can make money is to keep us waiting and thinking about buying the novelties that are selling next to the line we wait in, so it's all advertising ploy ;) or maybe it's just that people all agree on what's the best ride so we all have to wait together
great question, too bad i don't have an answer that resolves the problem however, our only choices are to wait in that long line or not ride at all :(
thanks for the 2 points and the thought provoking question

Went to Disneyland with the kids when it was a little drissling out. No lines at anything, we did the Magic Mountain log ride 3 times back to back. Then about 2 it cleared up and the crowds arrived. Waits went from 2 - 5 minutes to forever.

At Six Flags, they do it so they can charge you $15 extra for the ability to get in the Fast Lane on a few rides. Why wait an hour when you can pay extra to wait only 20 minutes?

Way too many people, not enough rides. Besides, they also take time to make sure everyone is buckled in, and safety devices are set. Thats one thing that takes a long time. Wouldn't want anyone flying off now would you? While that would make the line shorter... it would also delay the next ride. :(
Unfortunately here in houston, TX. They closed down Astro World.. -growls-

Places like Disney you can get a fast pass by using your entrance ticket in the fast-pass machine. then you come back later and go into a queue that has priority. Otherwise, use que time to have something to eat, that what I do.

This may be hard to grasp.... but think about it... one ride.... a whole bucket load o' people. It's going to take time. I'd LOVE to speed it up. Another dream of mine........ but I think it builds up anticipation. (Go to a Disney park where you can enjoy the queues!)
