I am an engineer with maruti udyog limited only. The production at diesel plant will start by october c2006 that is next month.
and by feb 2007 diesel variants of wagon r, swift and esteem will be launched.
must wait for it as its a great engine built in collaboration with fiat. will give 18-20 km per litre.
as in response to the guy above i must say he has no knowledge about cars.
maruti had launched zen diesel and esteem diesel. go to south or to punjab to see how much they re in demand.
it gives 25-26 km per litre but since engine had to be imported from peugot so the costs were high.
with setting up diesel plant in manesar the costing would be great and check out yourself how the engine performs

Swift Diesel has been scheduled for November this year...but expect it in December due to some delays at Fiat, who would be giving it's diesel technology for it...........Swift is a new design which was designed in Suzuki's Hamamatsu plant by both Suzuki & Indian engineers. It is not that big inside as it looks from outside and is heavy. The diesel engine will add some more weight which means more stress on the front suspension (as well as rear)....and you know very well that 'suspension' gets a sweating (cold feat) when it 'hears' about the indian roads conditions......Fiat diesels are good engines but they have performed comparatively below than the CRDi engine (as in Hyundai cars)....If you ask me I would wait for Hyundai Getz with a CRDi diesel engine...expected soon.........

may be somewhere in mid 2007
so far all maruti suzuki diesel engines have been a major flop, hence cant say anything, besides the price will be very high to.
Instead try the ford fiesta out as gives gr8 gr8 mileage of 16 kmpl in city & almost 32 kmpl on highway as per latest test by autocar magzine.
Even Indigo is coming out with a CRDI Engine by this Diwali, meanwhile a face lift version is already ready for delivery in this coming week.
