i mean to say what do u mean by RAMAN EFFECT and where can we get notes on it

Raman worked on light scattered from gases and the surfaces of solids. Most of this light is scattered elastically, a phenomenon well described by Rayleigh (Rayleigh scattering is why the sky is blue).

However, a very tiny number of photons will manage to excite a molecule to vibrate or rotate. It will lose energy doing this, and the loss of energy will depend on the vibration caused. Only about 1 in 10 million photons will scatter inelastically in this way.

Quantum mechanics tells us that only very specific excitations are possible for a given molecule, so this inelastic scattering can tell us things about the materials present. The effect is called Raman scattering, and studying materials using it is called Raman spectroscopy.

He was a physicist from India who came up with a novel form of infra-red spectroscopy. See links below. There was a very interesting article about Raman Spectroscopy and its use for planetary exploration and also security at airports in Popular Science recently. I'll try and find a link.
