Soldiers who lost limbs learn to surf

PISMO BEACH, Calif. - As a child of 1970s California, Derek McGinnis felt that riding waves was like a birthright, and losing his left leg to a suicide bomber in Iraq wasn't going to stop him from surfing again.

It's a war zone people are going to be maimed, wounded, shot, killed, paralyzed and yes some will lose limbs. I can recall a woman named Marissa Strock lost both legs below the knee. Dawn Halfaker lost her arm above the elbow, Tammy Duckworth lost one leg above and one leg below the knee, Melissa Stockwell lost one leg above the knee. There have been hundreds of amputees from this war. But war is war and the only thing that is going to stop the loss of limbs is peace.
