The answer has two options depending on why you want a static IP.

If your computer is part of a home network then you will be allocated an ip address via DHCP. This would normally be a 'private network' ip address and can be setup to be static via the control panel of your router (you will need to see your router's documentation) or server. Your router will normally be configure with a range of IP addresses that it can allocate (e.g. 192.168.0.0 onwards). These are classed as private IP addresses which means they can not be used via the internet and thus providing you with additional security. The router will then use NAT to convert your communication to an IP address issued by your ISP (Internet Service Provider - such as blueyonder, pipex, bt).

The other option is if you want to use a static IP address for Internet communication. Normally, ISP's will provide a dynamic IP address (i.e. it changes each time you log on via your ISP to the internet). This means that the ISP does not have to have a separate IP address for every customer and can recycle IP addresses depending on demand. This does not affect the average customer in anyway.

The other alternative is a static IP address (i.e. an exclusive IP address for only your own use). There are a couple of reasons for this and one is to setup your own webserver. Some people believe that you get better search engine result from servers with static IP address (this is a bit of folklore, and you are not significantly disadvantaged by not having one). The other reason may be to use a Secure Certificate.

NOTE - some hosting companies can provide you with a static IP address for your hosting account, you need to have initially selected a hosting compnay that provides this service or change your hosting provider.

If you are a private individual then you would obtain a static IP address via your ISP, not all ISP's provide this and you may need to change your ISP. Whatever reason you want a static IP address for, you will need to pay extra to have one.

I agree, why do you want one? Plus you will need to know and be able to set your default gateway and DNS servers. Tell us why you want one?

Or are you referring to your ISPs connection - going to a static IP so that you can run a web server etc from home? If so just ask your ISP but it does cost quite a bit more.
