I see that everyone has pointed out the very basics from the "kiddy" English version. Wonderful. Yes, the show does feature cards, but that's not the major theme of the show; that is like saying an awards ceremony is all about trophies. Also, Takahashi's creation did not even start out about just cards. If you read the first seven original mangas or watch the very first "separate" season (some fans also refer to this one as "Season Zero") you can see there are many different games that the Pharaoh plays, such as something similar to air hockey on an okonomiyaki table with a "puck" of explosives in ice.

The card battles are fought not only to "save the world from destruction" with the "heart of the cards" that the Americanized version likes to repeat every three minutes; many of the stakes set to where the loser dies. Yes, dies. Although, this concept is too "violent," so all of the guns, knives, blood, fighting, mentions of as well as actual deaths, are covered up by slingshots and "the Shadow Realm."

In short, the dubbed version has no point at all, but to let young, ignorant boys watch a "clean and childish" card-game fight. The theme of the original series is that one cannot escape his or her own past, destiny is a powerful force, and unique bonds (such as friendship, rivalry, hatred, jealousy, etc.) can be formed between anyone and can be changed.

Its is based on a real card game called Duel Monsters that started it's life in Japan.

The show is basically about a bunch of kids who have to save the world and destroy evil by playing this game with each other and winning. The Yu-gi character in the cartoon is also possessed by the spirit of an Pharaoh of ancient Egypt who gives him the ability to excel in Duel Monsters.

And it's point is that it's entertaining to people who are into that sort of thing.

They've got cards and some random monsters come out and Yu-Gi has got a new friend called the pharaoh and the final is going to be held in Egypt when the pharaoh will v. Yu-Gi.

Who will win? Stay tuned for the next episode......

thanks my lovely 9 year old son for that info!

Anime is for ADULTS not for KIDS... Well not the usa versions.
I agree with Munchkin one this one. There is some kids out there that does not know what it means only becuause they are watching a Cartoon and Yugioh is not a card game. IT is a lot more then that it actully gives a lot of values of life and how to make friends at least that is what I get out of and my friends.

The point is to beat your opponent in a game of duel monsters. They use cards and stuff and it ended up being an anime and manga.
