Of course, my favorite song changes fairly often. Right now there are a couple that spring to mind. Let me pontificate for a moment:
1. I Will Follow Him (Finale from "Sister Act")... firstly, just a great SOUNDING song that I have always adored. I happen to adore singing hymns, so the first part appeals to me greatly (opens with traditional, measured, melodic choir-singing) but then gets upbeat and "peppy" with great vocals by Wendy Makkena (Sister Mary Robert)... I recently assigned it to my class and they loved it. Now none of us can stop singing it.
2. Redneck Woman ... Gretchen Wilson... this song is just so funny that is makes me laugh every time I hear it! Great country swagger, too!
3. Closer to Fine/Galileo/Get Out The Map ... Indigo Girls... all of these are perennial favorites with great vocals, great messages and just great music.

The Son House version of "Death Letter Blues" Because it is one of the most powerful and emotionally raw songs I have ever heard. The lyrics alone are worth reading for their simple but deep poetic value. Like a lot of original blues it is deep and honest and mournful. The guitar playing style is superior to much modern day simple electric strumming and it is available on video where the amazing guitar technique is made to look simple.
There are no drums or bass or rhythm guitar or sound effects, Son House covers all that on one resonator guitar.
It is a song that many young people have never heard but they would do well to hear it because then they would learn something about real music that is sadly lacking today.
I very much doubt if there is a musician alive today who can produce the raw emotional power that Son House did.

"Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius. Something's so strong and pure in that song.
And I love the fact that it's like a story. A bigger country conquers this small country and then little by little the smaller country is trying to break free. Then comes a war. In the end of the song you can hear that the smaller country loses some but wins its freedom back. If you still haven't heard it, you should do it asap.

Song or poem?
Song - Love Story from Love Story movie
Poem(s) - Wait For Me by Konstantin Simonov and Sonet XVII by Pablo Neruda
Because... They are about love, showing that love is endless (Love Story), without explanation (Sonet XVII) and the most powerful force in the Universe (Wait For Me).
And I believe that love is just like that.

Imagine, by John Lennon
I think the music is absolutely beautiful , the words are so inspiring and speak of much needed hope, peace, love and understanding.Though it was written many years ago, it is timeless and applies to this generation and all to come.

"Vincent" by Don McLean.
It is a beautiful song about an even beautiful artist.
This song brings Vincent's paintings to my mind.
The simple life of the peasants, the calm landscapes
and even the shining stars. The way he saw it.

My favourite song at present (it is ever changing) is Joan of Arc, words and music by Leonard Cohen. I actually don't like the writer singing it himself and much prefer the version song by Allison Crowe. You can hear it on: http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music.html
You really need to hear it but the words are as follows:
Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc
as she came riding through the dark;
no moon to keep her armour bright,
no man to get her through this dark and smoky night.
She said, "I'm tired of the war,
I want the kind of work I had before,
A wedding dress or something white
to wear upon my swollen appetite."
“Well, I'm glad to hear you talk this way,
I've watched you riding every day
and there is something in me that yearns to win
such a cold, such a lonesome heroine”.
"And who are you?" she sternly spoke
to the one beneath the smoke.
"Why, I'm fire," he replied,
"And I love your solitude, I love your pride."
"Well, then, fire make your body cold,
I'm going to give you mine to hold."
And saying this she climbed inside
to be his one, to be his only bride.
Then deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and high above all these wedding guests
he hung the ashes of her lovely wedding dress.
It was deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and then she clearly understood
if he was fire, oh, she must be wood.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
but must it come so cruel,
must it be so bright?
Why? Well a very long time ago I hear someone on radio reading part of the song (I thought it was a poem at the time) and all I got to hear clearly was the verse:
It was deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and then she clearly understood
if he was fire, oh, she must be wood.
I was intrigued by this and thought it over; I decided it was an ultimate statement of love. Joan, facing death, sees the one who has pursued her in life (God) in the fire that will consume her and herself therefore as wood.
The song ends in an appropriately questioning mode.

I have too many. But the reason why I like them is because they empower and focus me. (Being a writer and all that.)
