I am flying to Canada in Oct 2006 and was wondering if I need a passport as a US citizen. I know the laws are changing and there seems to be a lot of confusion as to the difference between driving and flying. I don't have a passport and would prefer to not have to get one if possible, as I will only be there 3 days. I also have a military i.d. if this is at all helpful. Thank you for your time.

No you do not need a passport as a U.S. Citizen traveling by air to Canada in October of 2007. As of January 7, 2007 you will be required to have a passport when arriving by air for all destinations outside of the U.S.A. If traveling by auto, you will not need one for Canada or Mexico until December 31, 2008. For latest information visit: http://travel.state.gov/

before the 31st of December 2006 , it is not required to have a passport for Us or Canadian citizens to cross the border . It is better to have the passport because it would be the only ID that you can to bring that is issued by the government and has your photo in it . It good for 5 years and you could travel anywhere else in the world.
The only other thing that you could use is a citizenship card or a birth certificate with another government issued ID. The only down falls about the last two types of ID is you wont have a citizenship card if you are already a citizen ( for landed immagrants) and for birth certificates you have to bring another type of photo ID issued by the province or state. If you dont have that, there could also be a problem.
Even if you have a military ID , you still need to bring your birth ceertificate

No, you couldn't possibly need a passport to enter Canada. Mostly they are unknown here as most arrivees eat their documentation while in flight and then claim refugee status, for being "persons of color" or "having bad thoughts about whatever government they've created" etc. Not speaking English will get you in quickly, or better yet, being unable to speak any language. Just stare blankly as if you're suffering PTSD, as someone from one of the one thousand plus war zones at any moment. This will qualify you for an apartment, free medical, education and a bevy of social workers at your beck and call. And remember you need never learn a word of English to bring your entire tribe or clan over soon after your arrival. All you need is someone to affirm that they will be responsible for you and your progeny, distant uncles, whomever. I think it's called family something or other. Canada's sure is cool, eh? Oh, and as far as having a US military ID, what does this word military mean? Canadian military is largely a few Newfies who've lost their fishing jobs 10 years ago, due to not having a military in the first place to protect our waters from Spanish, French, Jap etc. factory ships that have devastated our own waters along with national greed and stupidity in this regard of course.

I don't remember if is effective already or not, but as far as I know since this coming November or the last November to travel to any place outside US you most have your passport ready. I Puerto Rico, which is part of the US, we used to travel to the Dominican Republic with our birth certificate, but not any longer, we, as American Citizens, need our passports to make a 2hrs. travel. If I was you I would get my passport. Good luck.

You need proof of citizenship, like a certified birth certificate/passport. Social security or voter's card in insufficient. You also need govenrment issued photo ID.
More to the point, you need to be up-to-date on what America requires for you to return.
A passport - expensive - is a worthwhile investment.

The REAL answer to your question is it depends on your airlines and they should tell you their regulations when you buy your ticket. Policy is different from airline to airline, and they need to tell you.
You do not need a passport to enter Canada until 2007, although it is easier. Crossing the boarder is one standard. Airline security is a different animal.
