There were a few times when it would freeze up during the boot up stage with unrecognizable characters on the screen. I am told this could be the video card or motherboard on its way out. Is this true? Thanks very much.

If it is actually happening before boot, i.e. during POST (Power On Self Test), then it is hard- or firm-ware related and NOT a virus, as your HDD would not yet have been read. I suggest you re-seat all of your memory cards, video adaptor & cables, and any other adaptor cards. Do this with PC plugged in, but wall socket switched off to keep the PC earthed.

If you have the problem AFTER POST, i.e after your O/S has started to load, then it MAY be a virus or other problem. Best bet may be to restore from your backups. However, it may be something as simple as needing to reinstal your video drivers. Check for these on your video manufacturer's WWW site.

I'm not sure about your problem, but i had a similar problem with my acer inspire notebook. After booting it would go into windows, thereupon it would freeze in windows with just the desktop wallpaper showing.

In the end i solved the problem by uninstalling the last piece of software installed(problem happened round the same time). Then i used the system restore wizard in windows xp, this fixed the problem but i had to reinstalling some software afterward. Haven't had any problems since i used the system restore wizard.

A defective computer screen isn't a reason for pc freeze. yet a defective photos output consistent with danger area of the project. right this is what i think of you're able to do. the 1st element is to verify the CPU temperature. if your motherboard CD has a hardware monitoring gadget, you could set up it to verify CPU temperature. If the temperature is going up and down oftentimes and if this occurs during the freeze-united statesthen you certainly could desire to interchange the CPU fan. If the above pronounced isn't the case then you certainly could desire to verify memory modules. you will get rid of them and use a circuit cleanser to spray away the dirt debris on the contacts. If that would not resolve, then this is a tough disk failure. verify notwithstanding if your difficult disk is giving occasional click sounds. If each and every thing pronounced above would not help, then you certainly could desire to verify your motherboard. A defective motherboard may lead directly to many undetectable subject concerns. notice: below any situations do not use fabric or brush to bathe digital circuitly.

it possible happen by over heat of CPU( processor). may be processor cooler is not performing well. you need to check it up. if you configure BIOS voltage of processor incorrectly ti could lead to over heat and PC stop working.if you are well aware of hardware. reset the mother board jumper for BIOS.unplugged all the hardware and reinstall it.hopefully it will work.

there is a slight possibility that your AGP or RAM is not supportive to your motherboard.but i believe if that is the case you won't be able to boot anyway. if the machine run for a while it is something else. may be you should change operating system format your hard drive & use anti virus.

please keep an eye on hard drive it may not perform consistantly and causing all these problem.

Check and see if you have too many programmes installed. Computes dont work too well and freeze if there are too many programmes installed which it cannot handle.

You may need to delete temporary files. Just search for *.tmp and delete the files you find. Remove unnecessary files from the disks too.

It could even be a virus. Just get an antivirus installed !

Spyware and malware infections of your system will cause your computer to act like it's high on speed.

The trick is to have anti-virus programs instead, 2-3 anti-spyware programs cued up, and your system defragged, and your disc drive cleaned out of all the internet cookies on your system.
