3 days 2 night stopover. Depend what time you arrive in KL. But in that time frame, if you plan your day properly, you can see Petronas Twin Tower, if you want to go up the tower until the bridge, you must be there by 7 am to get the ticket because theres on;y limited people allowed in the tower. From there you can visit KLCC and the aquarium. I forgot the name of the place. Near there is the KL tower where you can see KL vista in a 360 degree view.
From there, you can go to Merdeka Square or Independence Square.
If you got the time and stamina, you must visit Batu Caves, you can go there by bus or LRT. You can take the Putra LRT going to Putra Terminal, from Putra Terminal, there is a feeder bus going to the Cave. The cave is a Hindu temple, you have to climb about 200 steps. Be careful of the monkeys.
Then at night, visit Petaling Street, be careful of snatch thief though and pickpockets.
The Istana Negara is another stop you must see but you should go there in the morning.
You can visit Midvalley MegaMall if you like shopping. It's quite big.
These are my suggestions.

Then I suggest you should go to Kuala Lumpur Chinatown as Chinese New Year is around the corner that time. Then you can enjoy the food there as well.
If you like shopping, can visit KLCC shopping mall and visit the Twin Tower as well as the KL Tower.
Anyway, you can visit the websites below to get more information before you plan for your trip.
Enjoy travelling! :)

KLCC, KL Tower, Genting Highlands, Putrajaya, Petaling Street market (cheap imitation goods).
The biggest mall in asia is not Mid Valley Megamall anymore, now it's SM Mall of Asia in the philppines. But once the new phase of Mid Valley and Sunway Pyramid completed, it may surpass the mall in the philippines

I do agree with most of the answers. That will be during the Chinese New Year period, so do take some time to soak in the festivities. The best thing is the Spring Sale will be ongoing too. There are many mega-malls to visit. They are large and take time to cover. So your 3 days are best spent bargain hunting. And eating the varied cuisines there.
You must enjoy yourself there.
