If you have a normal tourist visa you CAN extend without leaving Japan. (I know I have done it) Go to your city's immigration office (Tokyo's is in Shinagawa-ku on a very inconvenient island in Tokyo bay).

Ask for a extension of visa form. You will have to detail where you have been in Japan, where you intend to travel to next and most importantly how much money you have available to spend.

Note, they will usually only allow you 1 extension, otherwise it may look like you are working illegally.

There is a charge and I think it is 4,000 yen. A little expensive, but cheaper than going to Korea.

What country are you from? Your nationality has a bearing on how long your tourist visa lasts and whether or not you can make multiple visits etc. But usually if you have a tourist visa you have to leave the country before coming back in.

is yours a 90-day tourist visa? One way is to go to Korea and come back and get another 90-day one.

If it's a work visa find a sponsor - ie employer.

If you do not extend it, you'll be an overstay and can be thrown into jail. Go to immigration or local city hall.
