By the time this happens, technology will be advanced enough to use other forms of energy to suit our increasing needs.

Answer: Nothing, as petroleum will never, ever end as a resource.
Please understand, the reserves of petroleum on this planet far exceed our demand.
They always have, and always will.
Petroleum is commonly thought of as a liquid, as a "finite"
resource. Petroleum is contained in many forms.
The only difference is the COST of refinement.
We always heard the news that, one day we will
"run out of oil"....
"Oil Production " is everything....
Sorry to scare you all with a dose of reality.
Cheap oil was, and is a thing of the past.
Oil is not...a limited commodity.
We have more oil than you can imagine.
We are currently finding oil, in It's many forms, coal, etc
in areas we already have know about, and due to the refining costs, are now exploring.
Bottom line, fill your tank...
we will never run out of gas.

An important question, and one that isn't ever brought into the discussions of energy.
Much more effort needs to be put into developing alternate sources of energy--solar, wind, water. Unfortunately, the petroleum industry is extremely powerful, and they want to squeeze out every dime from the public.

There will be a real shortage of plastics. Our forests may disappear completely if not patrolled by armed guards. Oil companies will declare bankruptcy (whether they are broke or not). Unless you are very, very rich you will get a lot more exercise.Corn production will retreat from 100 bu/acre to pre-industrial levels of 30-60 bu/acre on "good" land.Ethanol production will revert to "corn likker"Since natural gas and heating oil are petroleum products, The pall of coal smoke will return to our northern cities.Fresh fruit will become a real treat, even when in season locally.Shipping will revert to coal- or wood-fired boilers, or even to sail. Horses and bicycles will become inordinately expensive. Refrigeration will become a frivolity, and air conditioning a grievous waste.
....and on and on ad phobium.
