My husband now 79 remembers listening to the broadcast telling Britons that " we are now at war with Germany" air raid sirens sounded shortly after the announcment, was this just in Battlefield,Glasgow or was it all over the country.

My thoughts are very clear on this day, the day when my father's deadline expired and I was told to leave home.
No mother, she died one year earlier, and my brother evacuated gave him the chance to move his bird in.

Within that time and no money I left with two carrier bags to stay with a friend for a few nights.
An air raid warning went in sight of my house but I just keep going.
The tears in my eyes were caused by my thoughts of home not fear.
I didn't care if I lived or died.
I lived and still do in London's East End.
So yes, they defiantly did.
I am 83 and fit.

Just read hondanut's report.

Like hondanut says...it was national. I wasn't there....mind.....

Obviously on 3.9.39 there was no imminent danger of a bombing attack, so perhaps it was done to accustom people to the warning.and what to do when the warning came.

I can't imagine how it must have felt......to hear that thing....it makes my blood run cold now ...and I was born 9 years after the end of WW2.

it was countrywide...it meant that wherever you were you heard them,if you heard them but didn't know what it was all about ,you asked and someone would say..Britain is now at war with Germany..however according to my mum she said that nearly the whole nation was around a radio waiting for Churchill's announcement..as it was announced earlier that the prime minster was going to address the nation..
