In chess the King can not be taken, so it can not be killed, it can be put in check.
The difference between check and checkmate is that when the King is in check either the King can moove or another piece can be moved to block the check. It is checkmate when the King is in check and he has no other moves where he will not be in check.
There is a third condition called stalemate where the King is not in Check but the player has no moves that will not put him in check.
In this situation, the game is a draw.

There is a difference.
This is after you have moved.
Check is where the King can be taken, but can move elsewhere without being in check.
You win the game by getting the other person's peice into checkmate.
Checkmate is where the King cannot be movedinto another space, without being in check, and therefore the opposition wins.
You cannot take (kill) the king with check.

Check is when the king is in danger of being captured. The opponent announces "check" when one of his pieces is attacking the king. Now the player who is checked has only 3 options: move the king out of the way, put a piece in between the king and attacker (does not apply when knight is attacking piece), or to capture the attacker. Checkmate is when the king is unable to move anywhere without being captured (meaning the square the king is on is being attacked along with all the other squares the king can move to, and/or the king can be trapped by its own pieces in some cases).

The point of chess is to capture your opponents king. Check is when the king can be taken on your next move if he not moved or another piece is used as a defensive block. Check mate is when neither of these options are available, and you have won the game. Well done, you!

I'm sure you will get more technical answers than this.......but check is when the king is threatened but there is still a move you can make to protect him. Checkmate is when you've got the king holed up a corner and there are no more moves you can make to save him. That is when the game is over......the King cannot be killed....he just has to have no place else to go, or nobody you can put in front of him.
Hope this helps.

Check means your king is being threatened. You have to remove the check. You can do this by;
1.) Moving the King out of check.
2.) Moving another piece to block the check and protect the king
3.) Attacking the piece that is threatening your king
3a.) You cannot castle while in check
Checkmate
You have no options and can move no pieces to protect the King. Game over.

Check means that the opponents king is in danger but there is a safe spot so the king can be taken out of danger, check mate means that the opponents king is in danger and there is no escape move to save it

Check is when the king is under attach but has an escape by moving or blocking
Check mate is when the king is under attack and cant do anything about it. Hence the game is over
