I suspect that the stinking smell is related to the wool treatment method or the dye they used. I have aired the carpet under the sun for several days but the smell is still there. I am not sure if wet washing will get rid of the smell.

Leave it in sunlight for several days...it should have a positive effect in taking the smell out. Good luck.

I would be hesitant to "wet wash" your rug. Depending on its' size, you may be able to take it to a dry cleaner.

The safest thing, is the most boring... let it air out over a much longer period of time. You may not want to air it out in direct sunlight, as your colors may fade, but in a warm place with good ventilation.

Covering the smell with another smell, just means you have a nasty smell and another (better) smell too. This really doesn't solve your problem. Many perfumed deodorants will advertize otherwise, but all they're doing is covering the scent. Plus, you have now exposed yourself to the host of chemicals these scented "air fresheners" contain. Research shows that some of these products can be harmful, or can, when used, mix with other chemicals and become toxic to you and/or the envioronment (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/05/060524123900.htm).

Best of luck, and congrats on having a cool new morroccan rug!!! Lucky you!!

Try spraying it with "Febreze" antimicrobial. You may have to do it several times to get the smell out. I think it is from the wool so you may have to treat it over several months.
I have a wool poncho from Ecuador that had a slight smell of the wool and the Febreze freshened it up.

If it was an Afghani or Turkish rug, I'd say it was their pet camels you smell. Obviously not the case here though.
Try an odor "neutralizer", not a deoderizer. You want to neutralize the smell, not just cover it up.

Do not wet that carpet! Try some Fabreze or some baking soda sprinkled on the carpet; then let it sit and vacuum.
