If M Theory or membrane theory we easily describe in a sentence or two, it would not still be controversial after almost 80 years since its introduction. There are no clearly defined 11 components, but a non-chairal 10 extra spacetime dimensions, which is the maximum allowed under the supersymetry parameters.

Below is a link to great paper that attempts to answer your question. As you will see your answer has been under development since 1923-24.

Its based on some complex & complicated calculations. The result is 11 dimensions. I don't dig too much into M theory, so I not sure about the calculations.

dear samurai,

what i could understand from the development till "11 dimensions"; that i had to look into something more deeper than science; as to why why we find more unknown when we move forward / enquire;

first fact - we have to "move & know" to live with "feeling of accomplishment";

next Truth is - we have to realise and utter-to-ourselves in full belief that "till now whatever is Known is not True fully - in India it is called - "Neti - means N + Eti = Not even This! ";

it has been most powerful scientific expression for me , because
- it tempts me to move further
- still asks me to enjoy what i found
- & interestingly -"muse" with what is yet to unfold - appears to be ever larger

remember - a boy liked a shining stone from a sea beach;
up-on there searching he found.... endless shore full of such "shining stones" slightly hidden or "ready!" to be uncovered by the starry-eyed-boy............

well, i wouldn't ever know; far i am

good question. i don't know if they have names. last i heard they were debating the 12th dimension. Eleven is the number that they have made sense of so far in their equations. if it is true then there are probably more. Try looking it up on wikipedia.com.
