Define Altitude Of A Triangle

HaHa...You can't start without a little manipulation and labeling...

Okay gang, first draw, turn, or position the triangle so that the "longest side" is roughly horizontal to make this easy to visualize.

Okay, the longest side is the base.

The other two sides either go up to a point, or go down to a point. Lets be neat, and turn the triangle so the point is at the top.

If you are still with me, the longest side is called the "base", and we have two shorter sides slanting upward meeting at a point.

The "altitude" of this triangle is a straight line drawn perpendicular to the base which passes through the junction point of the other two sides at the top. This fact never changes, no matter what the overall shape of the triangle is.

Done.

Consider any triangle, now take a side as base and the opposite side as a point p,now draw a line parralel to the base passing through the point p and now extend both the base and the parrallel line. Now the distance between the base and the parralel line is called the altitude of a triangle.
