As well as David's options, you might like to try the National Archives too, as their search has mention of it:

For financial information, try Companies house for a start. They offer a free service that gives basic information. Its closed right now though.

For historical info, it is unlikely that Unigate will have too much of relevance, unless it is a particularly historic company. Try local libraries and museums.

There is a book / website called KOMPASS which give details of companies.

Unigate may be able to help you direct as they have to keep company records.

Friends reunited now have a section on jobs / employment so you may find something there.

Finally, check out the local library, they may have info in local books.

Depending on what you want to find out may be worth putting an ad in the paper.

Good Luck.
