I've been working with Microsoft .NET for a little over three years now. I have to admit that when I first got started I wasn't terribly impressed with the idea. I never got excited about Java because I didn't like the concept of working with a runtime environment that totally insulated me from the hardware. My initial impression of .NET was that it was Microsoft's answer to Java. I was not excited about it.

I had the good fortune to get a contract with the local Microsoft Technology Center to develop some .NET training materials. My job for six months was to poke at .NET, read the documentation and whatever articles I could find, and write quick start guides (PowerPoint presentations and sample code) that Microsoft's consultants and technical specialists could use to get their clients up and working with .NET. What a great way to learn a new development environment! And whenever I got into a jam or had a question I could get an answer fast. I got to peek under the hood and see how things work, and I was quite impressed.

Since then I've used .NET on a number of projects and have written this weekly column for over two years. The more I learn about .NET, even though there are some things I don't particularly like, the more I'm impressed by it.

Its really good for quick and reliable application development and deployment but the scope of doing low level computing or high end research is almost zero at this time.

But remember MS is promoting .NET in a big big way. Vista will have .NET as an inherent feature and the the next kernel will be aware of objects.

well .net is microsoft's answer to web services. it is the same with sun one technology. both of these target web services. essentially it means that the future will rely more on licensing sofware on the internet for a period rather than directly buying it. so the need for web services. also in .net the underlying architecture is build on xml and its application soap. so it is going to have a lot of scope in the future.
