I've been driving for more than 40 years and I use it only rarely with an automatic transmission. It's a good idea, however, to use it if you're parked on a slope.

Yes, always use your emergency brakes when parked to make it a habit so that way you do it automatically. Many kids and adults get injured or killed when the car for some reason loses the parking gear or whatever is called. And no, It does not hurt your regular brakes.

It does not hurt the regular brakes. It is always a good idea to use the emergency brake on a car whenever you are parked on even a slight incline. Just ask yourself: is it better for the weight of my car to be resting on the brakes or the transmission? It is far better for the wear and tear to be on the brakes.

In addition to the "safety factor"--many of the newer vehicles use the
emergency brake in conjunction with the "self-adjusters"--so each time one applies the E/B--the brakes are
adjusted..Will not harm reg brakes-however sometimes in extreme cold-water can get trapped in the brake cable or on the brakes and make releasing the brake difficult, if not impossible until the temperature thaws.

If you have a standard car, not an automatic, yes, especially if you are parking on a hill. Do not trust just the regular brakes on a hill when parking there. No it is a mechanical brake and will not hurt the regular ones- they are separate and that is why it will always work when your regular ones do not. Be safe!

Hi, Use your emergency "parking" brake when parked on a hill or slope to save strain on your transmission while in Park. It is good to use it once in a while to keep the linkage in working order. It will not harm your regular brakes at all, in fact it is part of and linked to your regular brakes. I wouldn't use it EVERY time because over time it could stretch the cable and weaken its ability.

It doesn't hurt your Reg brakes - but mostly you should use it when parked on an incline or slanted hill, or near a drop off (my Fiance' co-worker parked near a boat ramp & didn't use his ER. Brake & his car rolled into the Ocean !!! )-or anywhere that you dont feel car car will not be safely secure

I use my emergency brake when I'm parked, okay I do when I remember. I always use it when I'm on a slope. It doesn't wear out the regular brakes. Do remember to disengage it when you start driving, that's really bad for everything if you don't.

I always use my emergency brake when I park. I have lived long enough to see 3 cars go careening out of control when they were parked and somehow slipped out of gear.
