I think 'reign of God' is a better translation because 'kingdom' has connotations of earthly power set-ups - I don't think Jesus wanted anything like the then Roman empire or other regimes that have existed since. Reign may have connotations too but we are confined to human terminology.
I have no knowledge of the book you mention but I have studied this subject elsewhere and, yes, I think Jesus wished to begin the reign of God now (in his own earthly lifetime and since - that is as soon as possible, in the ever present now) and I believe he did. God reigned perfectly in the life of Jesus and less perfectly in the lives of those that followed him, including ourselves.
The reign of God is begun but not fully realized, it is now (begun) but also not yet (it will eventually be fully realized).
Earth is now what we have made it and many people's experience of it is as a hell - I imagine even atheists might agree with me on that. So why not change?

The jews of Jesus' times, believed that the Messiah would come inorder to establish a kingdom , and that He would rule as a king over them, protecting them from all enemies. It is against this belief that Jesus declares, that the kingdom, that God has promised, is not outside but within eachone's heart ("Kingdom of God is within You") It is also surprising that whenever he narrates parables refering to the kingdom of God, He refers the Kingdom to persons and not to a particular place. When the disciples asks abt, how it is like to be in the kingdom of God , he says that kingdom of God is like the merchant who would sell all his wealth when he finds the one precious jewel. Or again like a man who sells all his wealth inorder that he can get the field in which the hidden treasure lie. Again on another occassion He says that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed (...)a mustard seed which grows to a big tree & which gives refuge to all the birds and animals. When we love God with our whole heart, when we dont mind risking anything for Him,when our hearts are filled with love for our fellow beings, then God establishes His kingdom in our own hearts itself. Heaven is not a place where we go when we die but heaven, the kingdom of God is within eachone of us, when we are living in this world itself.

It comes from the e book of Daniel "There before me replaced into one like a son of guy coming with clouds and heaven." Daniel 7:13 Daniel 7:14 actually says "He replaced into given authority, glory and sovereign power." even as Jesus refers back to the "Son of guy" it really is probable what he's concerning.
