aokigahara isn't mysterious - its ghastly! For some reason people like to commit suicide in this forest and trekkers sometimes have the misfortune to bump into those whom the occassional police round-up misses.

As for mysterious, Oyu's stone circle in Akita Prefecture is mystery. It was built 4000 years ago. It's not much to look at like StoneHenge. It more resembles the medicine wheels of the North American indians.

Oyu's stone circle was built by the Jomon people (12,000 B.C. - 500 B.C.) They also made these mysterious Dogu statues that some think represent ancient astronaut visitors.

Try Osore-zan up in Aomori.

It's a dead zone volcano with a spooky feel and tons of ghosts.

I camped on top and met some ghosts, but they were all children.
