Well the gift depends on how close you are with your teacher. I once was a teacher's pet! But anyways....talk to your teacher. Just talk about random things. That way when your teacher opens up you can pick up certain hints about his/her life. Look at the items on their desk. Is there a certain recurring theme/item. Bam...there you have it. I promise subtle hints always work!
