There are 100 students in a MBA course. The college offers following disciplines as Specialistaion:
Marketing (MK)
Finance (FN)
Human Resources (HR)
International Business (IB)
Information Technology (IT)

Each student has to opt for dual specialisation, that is any two disciplines out of 5 above.
Now each discipline has following number of students:
MK 90
FN 60
HR 20
IB 20
IT 20

How does the college schedule the periods so that there is least wastage of time?

Please Note: The figures given above might not actually add up as I have taken random figures.
I simply want to know how it can be done. Got it.

For that, you must know how many classes of each discipline are to be taken per week, and in a day, what is the macimum number of classes one can keep (i.e. what is the duration of each class v/s total time for the day), and what is the number of subjects in each specialisation that students have to study.

After that, normally MBA schools have computer programs to allocate the class schedules etc. Normally, the schedule is made first and then students are asked to choose classes such that no 2 chosen classes are at the same time.

Maths or intuition?

From your figures there are two popular disciplines and three of minor attendance, so you would make sure that the two popular ones don't clash, and ask the students who are interested to opt for one of the others. Trying to please everybody is rarely a good policy.
