Our representatives all have web sites. There are also government web sites that will list who voted for what bill. You can do that at home after the kids go to bed. Another way is to talk to people about the issues. Just remember that EVERYBODY thinks their way is right. I have included some links that you should read. They talk about critical thinking. By learning about critical thinking you will learn how to tell the lies from the truth by the way they are passing on the information. The links are:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_thinking

http://www.criticalthinking.org/aboutCT/ourConceptCT.shtml

http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/itl/

The information contained in those 3 links is good. I had an entire semester in college that was just critical thinking. I think you will find beneficial in not just politics but in all aspects of your life. Good luck.

Read one editorial a day in the Newspaper. Find out the email address of the two party's and request their voting recommendations. Read everything you can stand about the Iraq War. Read everything you can stand about the rebuilding effort in New Orleans, those are two main events at the moment in the Country. Type Gettysburg Address in to the Yahoo Research in the answer sections. This is the section where you are actually answering a question as I am answering your question at the moment.
The Gettysburg Address is the greatest political Speech ever made in American History according to most experts. Read it slowing and thoughtfully ten times and figure out why it is so great and what Lincoln is saying about the Soldiers that fought at Gettysburg during the American Civil War.

The act of voting is as important as who or even what you vote for. Most people have a political or ideological preference and vote for the person or party that represents that view.

Other than that vote on results. If you don't think the lot that are in are doing a good job, vote them out.

Besides voting is secret so no one is going to know you used a pin!

I suggest that you watch some of the shows on CNN. While some are awful others are pretty good, you can also just look for articles in most newspapers or even on-line. Blogs can also be a good place to find out information.

Bill Maher has a good show on HBO. The most important thing about politics is to form your own idea and not get suckered in by persuasive people, it is also a good idea not to talk to much about politics as some people have very strong ideas.

good luck.

when an election is coming up, you will get an election or voter's guide in the mail that should tell you in advance what you'll be voting on. that is a good place to start. the ones i've seen also have some arguments articulating the pros and cons of each issue, which can be helpful, but can also be simplistic. again, it's a good place to start, and you can do your own research from there if you find something you need to know more about. i know where you're coming from sort of... the state i grew up in had maybe 6 things on the ballot each time; california has referendums and measures going up to r!!!

thank you for trying to take voting seriously... it is hard to prioritize it when there is so much going on, but it is so important. one thing i'd ask you to consider is trying to get your boys interested with you, if you can. it's trite, but children are our future... and boys get drafted someday by leaders we put in charge. with a war going on now, they might already have questions...
