For California law, is it required that I have my drivers license to work? I am 18 years old. I will be getting it soon, its just I have been hired in retail and I will be proving my identification at my job orientation tomorrow and I am going to bring my birth certificate. Will this pass?

You dont need to have a drivers license to work in California. Most employers just require some picture id (if they ask). I know some people who dont have drivers license and they got jobs. You can bring your birth certificate but you should also bring a picture ID.

You do not have to have a drivers license to work unless it's a requirement for the job itself.

You will need to provide proof of legal status. There are a number of ways to do that. A US passport will meet that requirement if you have one. Or a state drivers license or non-drivers ID and a Social Security card.

There are other forms of documentation that are acceptable but those are the two most commonly used. Here's a link to the I-9 form that employers are required to have you complete within 3 business days if hire. It includes a complete list of documents that meet the proof of eligibility requirements:
